Forget best album lists or worst album lists or most influential artist lists and everything else. Blender Magazine has upped the ante by cutting through all the minor shit and giving us The 50 Worst Things To Ever Happen To Music.
As with anything, there are begrudgingly agreeable parts (#6 is
Madonna's faux English accent) and ridiculous parts (#23 is Woodstock
'99, but then you realize that Blender's readership was probably there,
molesting half-dressed drunk women and throwing mud at each other).
Above all, choice #50 is a decent gauge to see if you want to make your way through the rest of Blender's piece.
50. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Has any record’s influence upon music proved so malignant? Concept
albums, progressive rock, Brian Wilson’s nervous breakdown, baby
boomers yammering away about the Summer of Love, musicians taking
themselves more seriously than cancer surgeons — all the Beatles’
fault. And is there anyone alive who hasn’t suffered a collapse of the
will to live during “When I’m Sixty-Four”?
Hmmm....Check it all out and see what they've left out.
